"Just Another Valley" by Joe Domino

In heavy shadow,

the weighted river

digging deeper,

barefoot and wading

a protagonist flow

draws me in--

above me

sunlit peaks,

and against

the palest blue sky

an eagle

making triumphant patterns--

I have seen

this valley before,

walked the pebbled path

along the bank,

current-spray

washing red stain

from canyon walls:

Some call it

simply clay--

an understatement--

perhaps God thought

too much of it,

and unfired man

inclined toward a thermal mold.
