"Thanksgiving" (by Joe DiMino)

Suffering is a powerful persuader-
Moving us toward
Or away from God-

Who has not
In some seemingly helpless moment
Been tempted to flee-
Not reach out in faith to Heaven
But turn away from Light
Toward shadows,
Drawing back
The dense stone of the tomb
Upon ourselves
Seeking to hide?

It is during these trials
That Thanksgiving is most appropriate;
To place upon the scale of balance
Many blessings
Far outweighing, over the course of time, all ills;
See one's self as part of a greater community
So if not finding joy of our own
Then be lifted in spirit
By the faith and courage of others
Who have perhaps even less-

Whether at top of the pyramid
Or foundation-bottom,
It is the eye in the middle,
Seeing within and without,
That we must turn to
For greater vision and hope....
