"One Leaf Escaped" by Joe DiMino

One leaf escaped…
Thought I had gathered all,
With the season’s
Joys and sorrows
Piled them to rest—
But here, behind a massive trunk,
Rooted deep
Awaiting winter’s first blast
A lone survivor of the dead
Lays speckled and brown—

Lone survivor of the dead?

A paradox you say!

An oxymoron?

Have not we
This in common
With all of creation?
We live yet die—
Die yet live—
Live an extended death
Our worlds compounds
Of reciprocal
Graves and eternities!
