"In The Early Morning Hours" (by Joe DiMino)

In the early morning hours
Before each shocking dawn
My eyes seem less encumbered
In fact, more reflective
My ears precisely keyed—
Taunt heads ready
For sensitive drumming

It is here I dream awake
And write:

Though most often seeking
Greatness of nearer brilliance
I see the conscious-self a contrast
Needing refuge from daylight
Taking recess with distant stars
At cooler arm’s-length
Draw my necessary warmth—
Relishing softer-tolerance
For darker borders
And confused loving….
